Punctuation: the signposts of writing

What is punctuation?

Punctuation acts like signposts so we know where text is taking us and what it means.

Correct punctuation makes text easy to read and understand.

For example, the capital letter of the first word and the full stop after the last word clearly mark out the beginning and ending of a sentence – so it is not jumbled up with the sentences before or after.

Not just full stops and commas

Commonly used punctuation marks include:

  • apostrophes
  • colons and semicolons
  • exclamation and question marks
  • hyphens and dashes
  • speech marks (single and double).

Not forgetting bullet points!

Is punctuation that important?

Yes, because without it we’d have to put a lot more effort into deciphering text and could just give up if it’s too demanding.

Punctuation and proofreading

We proofread to ensure punctuation is correct and clear.

Most businesses and organisations want to publish text that is easy for their customers and users to read and understand, and that is what we help you to achieve.
